The North American P-51 Mustang was an American single-engine fighter during World War II. It was manufactured in the US factories of North American Aviation. It was used successfully in the US Air Force and by its allies during WWII and during the Korean War. The highly successful design of the 1940s meant that the aircraft remained in service in one or more countries until 1984! Over 15,000 Mustangs were produced over a period of 46 years. Today, many of these aircraft are in private hands, including our fictional hero Maverick! Mustangs are still used in air shows and flying competitions to this day.
