The players embark on an exciting journey in three different scenarios that can be combined with one another. They find foreign inhabited islands, they fight pirates and act as privateers themselves. On behalf of the Catanian Council, the players must go fishing, conclude trade agreements with the natives and fight pirate nests. This expansion is not a complete game! It can only be played with the original game Catan - The Game! This expansion is compatible with all editions of Settlers of Catan that have been released so far and that contain modeled plastic figures. A pirate ship is blocking the straits, and it is not possible to continue on to your destination. The captain asks you what to do. Attack? Pay tribute? Avoid and accept a detour? You decide! Do you have enough gold in your coffers to buy your way on? Are there other lucrative targets or a convenient alternative route? A shot across the bow is always possible, but what do you do if the pirate is not impressed? In the Explorers & Pirates expansion, you say goodbye to the tranquil island of Catan, where there are few dangers other than the annoying bands of robbers. Sent by the Catanian Council, you set off into unknown territory to establish new bases there. Brave women and men are ready to seek their fortune in the distance and join you as settlers. But you are not just explorers and settlers - the Catanian Council has various vague information about the archipelago beyond the horizon. Therefore, you can accept different missions: The pirates who keep appearing off the coast of Catan must have their camps somewhere. Find them and face battle. Settlers are less useful in this mission, so you should equip units to be able to successfully hunt pirates. Fame and gold await the victorious conqueror. But there are also peaceful missions. There are reports of huge schools of fish somewhere out there. Set sail with empty holds and go fishing. Or even better: take your units far away and return from there with a ship full of fish. Rumor has it that the unexplored island world is inhabited not only by pirates but also by peaceful inhabitants. The Catanian Council wants to benefit from their experience - and if you are the one who finds the natives, you are one of the beneficiaries. Not only do you bring home unknown spices on Catan, but you also bring knowledge of the island world, which leads to shorter travel times and support in the fight against the pirates. Explorers & Pirates brings a variety of new elements to the Catan gaming world. An important element is the exploration of an unknown island world, as is already the case in some seafaring scenarios. What is new here is that the players have mobile ships and use them to commute between the home island of Catan and the island world, which develops and is to be discovered anew in each game. You set off from Catan, the ship equipped with settlers or units, and you bring back fish and spices. The three missions Pirate Camps, Fish for Catan and Spices for Catan can be played individually or combined with each other as desired. The expansion itself is modular. In an introductory game that has only a few new rules, you learn in particular about the movement of ships, the transport of settlers and the discovery and settlement of the unknown island world. In further scenarios, the missions are introduced bit by bit, so that you only learn a few new game elements (and rules) from game to game, until you finally arrive at the Explorers & Pirates scenario, in which you play with all the rules and missions.
