Black and white cattle are ruminants, like camels and sheep. They have four stomachs.
Black and white bulls and cows are the most popular breed of cattle in the world. They were first bred in the Netherlands and brought to America in 1857. These cattle are instantly recognizable by their black and white coat coloring -- they are the prototype of the domestic cattle, so to speak. Today, black and white cattle are kept for their amazing milk production: one cow produces over thirty liters of milk a day. They live three to four years, but some live much longer. Cattle have four stomachs. When kept in stables, they eat a combination of grasses and hay, which is then chewed. The half-digested food is pushed back from the first stomach into the mouth, where it is then chewed until it is in a condition that allows it to pass through the other three stomachs. The cows then look as if they are chewing gum.
