Tinkers are powerful horses with a full mane, strong pasterns, short backs and large hooves. The typical spotted coat pattern was deliberately bred in around 1900. These horses were initially called "magpies". Tinkers are very balanced and gentle.

The Tinker was only recognized as an independent breed in Germany in 2005.
