Saddle bronc riding is a popular rodeo competition. The cowboy has to stay on the back of a bucking wild horse for as long as possible. No easy task!
In saddle bronc riding, a wild horse (also called a bronc) is saddled. As soon as the cowboy has mounted and gives a signal, the gate to the arena is opened. The horse runs off bucking, and the rider is only allowed to hold on to the pommel of the saddle with one hand. If he touches the horse with the other hand, he loses points. As with bull riding, the cowboy has to stay on top for at least eight seconds. But it's not just about time. The rider receives additional points if the horse bucks exceptionally hard.
Interesting facts
In the past, there were no saddles when riding wild horses in rodeo. The cowboy held on to the mane.
