Newborn baby elephants already weigh 100 kilograms and are 90 centimeters tall. After half an hour they can stand on their own two feet and walk with the herd. A baby elephant falls a good 70 centimeters at birth. But nothing happens to it.
They are still quite clumsy after birth and have to learn how to use their trunk. They cannot yet feed themselves with it and are suckled by their mother for the first year. They gain a good kilo in weight every day. It is very important that they grow quickly because a lion or crocodile can hardly harm adult, healthy animals. Should a predator come dangerously close, the adults form a circle around the young. In the middle of this circle, they are well protected.
