Fascination of the animal world: wildness, beauty, uniqueness
Wild Life: Cheetah cub
When cheetah cubs are born, they weigh just 300 grams. Their fur already has the typical black spots and their face has the unmistakable tear-shaped stripes. In the first few months of their lives, cheetah cubs have a long, fluffy mane on their head and neck.
Cheetah cubs are very helpless and only open their eyes after two weeks. When their mother is out hunting, they are defenseless against hungry lions and hyenas. Their only chance is to be as well camouflaged as possible. A long, silver-colored mane helps them with this. It sticks up like a mohawk and from a distance resembles long blades of grass. At around six months, cheetah cubs learn to hunt for themselves. After one to two years, the little ones are out of the woods and can look after themselves.
