Fascination of the animal world: wildness, beauty, uniqueness
Wild Life: Baby Giraffe
At birth, baby giraffes weigh 50 kg and are already 180 cm tall. They fall to the ground from a height of two meters, but do not injure themselves and can walk after a short time.
Baby giraffes are raised together with other young animals in a kind of kindergarten. A female giraffe from the herd acts as the kindergarten teacher and looks after the calves while the other mothers search for food. If predators approach, she immediately raises the alarm. The female giraffes then stand protectively in front of their babies and kick at the attackers. At around four months, the little ones begin to pluck leaves from trees and eat them, but are still suckled by their mother until they are nine months old.
