The word kangaroo comes from the language of the Aborigines, the original inhabitants of Australia. It means something like "I don't understand" and was the answer to the question asked by the British sailor James Cook as to what kind of animal it was. What a misunderstanding! The marsupials have a kind of rubber band in their hind legs. This makes them jump upwards with each jump. The faster a kangaroo hops, the further the animal is catapulted forward and the less energy it uses. Although it can reach a breathtaking speed of 64 km/h, there is one thing it cannot do: walk backwards.
